If your agent runs long, tool-heavy sessions that have to stay coherent and make good decisions, Opus 4.8 is the safe choice for maximum quality.
When to Pick Fable 5
Fable 5 is a strong pick when the work is writing- and generation-heavy: long-form content, creative and narrative tasks, drafting, and everyday assistant work where fluent, well-structured output matters. It is also a good default all-rounder if you want frontier-level Claude quality with a different balance of capability and cost than Opus.

Opus-tier models typically cost more per token than other options in the lineup, reflecting the extra reasoning capability. Fable 5 brings its own pricing balance.
