Twenty dollars a month is what most people already pay for a ChatGPT or Claude subscription. The question I keep getting is whether that same $20 can buy something more useful: an agent that lives in your Telegram or WhatsApp, runs tasks on a schedule, browses the web and remembers you, instead of a chat window you have to open.
It can. Here is what $20 or less actually gets you in September 2026, and which one I would pick for different kinds of people.
A chat app is not an agent
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are chat apps: you open them and ask. An agent like Hermes Agent or OpenClaw runs on a server all day, so it can:
- answer you on Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord or Slack instead of a browser tab
- run jobs on a schedule, like a 7am news digest or a Friday invoice reminder
- use tools: a real browser, a terminal, your calendar and email through integrations
- keep long-term memory about you and your projects
The trade-off is that someone has to host it and someone has to pay for the model. Every option below solves those two things differently.
The options, all starting at $20 a month or less

One setup goes slightly over the line but is worth knowing: if you already pay $20 for ChatGPT Plus, you can plug that subscription into a Hermes bot on a $6 host and pay no per-token bill at all. That is $26 a month for an always-on GPT-5.6 agent. Details in this walkthrough.

Best overall under $20: a managed plan that includes the model
The number that surprises people is how much of a hosted agent's cost is the model, not the server. A plan that bundles credits covers light use without a second bill or a second signup, and you top up only if you go past the allowance. OpenClaw Launch Pro is $20 with $10 of model credits, 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and room for three bots, which is enough for a personal assistant plus a work bot plus an experiment. You can run Hermes or OpenClaw on it and switch models from the dashboard.
Cheapest that still works well: Lite plus pay-as-you-go
If you use your bot a few times a day, $6 a month (or $3 for the first month) plus a few dollars of model usage is enough. The $1 of included credit gets you started, and you can top up or connect your own OpenRouter key whenever you want.
Best if you want free models: Agent 37 Plus
Their $9.99 tier bundles free models with caps per 5-hour window and per week. Good if your usage is light and you do not care which model answers.
Best for tinkerers: a $5 VPS
Hermes is light: a median of 282 MB of memory across the 31 live containers we measured. Any $5 server with at least 1 GB of RAM will run it, and 2 GB is comfortable. You pay in setup time and in keeping it patched. The Hetzner install guide is a good place to start.
What $20 will not buy
- Unlimited frontier-model usage. If your agent reads long documents or browses all day on the most expensive models, the model bill can pass $20 on its own. Pick a cheaper model for routine work and save the premium one for hard tasks.
- Your Claude subscription in a hosted agent. Anthropic does not allow hosted third-party services to route a Claude Pro subscription, so for Claude you need API credits or a plan that includes them.

How to decide in two minutes
- Do you already pay for ChatGPT Plus? Use it with a $6 host.
- Do you want one bill and no API keys to start? Take a plan with included credits. The Lite plan is $3 for the first month for new customers.
- Do you enjoy running Linux boxes? A $5 VPS and your own key.
