GPT-5.6 Is Here: Sol, Terra, and Luna Explained

By OpenClaw Launch Team

What Is GPT-5.6?

GPT-5.6 is OpenAI's newest model series, announced on June 26, 2026. Unlike a single model bump, it launched as three tiers with distinct roles:

  • Sol — the flagship, OpenAI's most capable model to date, with a particular emphasis on long-horizon and cybersecurity tasks and its strongest safety stack yet.
  • Terra — the balanced everyday model, positioned as competitive with GPT-5.5 while being roughly 2x cheaper.
  • Luna — the fast, low-cost option for high-volume and latency-sensitive work.

GPT-5.6 powers both ChatGPT and Codex. For exact pricing, context windows, and model IDs, check the OpenAI docs or the OpenRouter model list once the models are broadly available — those are the source of truth and will change.

Limited Preview First

The initial release is deliberately narrow. OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6 to a small set of partners (around 20 companies) as a limited preview and, at the U.S. government's request, placed restrictions on access — noting that such restrictions should not become the norm. OpenAI has said Sol, Terra, and Luna will become generally available in the following weeks. In practice that means most people will get hands-on access shortly after launch rather than on day one.

How to Pick Among Sol, Terra, and Luna

The tiering maps cleanly to workload:

  • Reach for Sol when you need the deepest reasoning or are doing security-sensitive, long-horizon work and quality outweighs cost.
  • Default to Terra for most assistant, drafting, and tool-use tasks — GPT-5.5-class quality at a lower price.
  • Use Luna for high-volume, cheap, latency-sensitive jobs like classification, routing, or quick replies.

As always, do not pick from a spec sheet. Run two candidates on your real prompts and keep whichever gives the best results per dollar.

Running GPT-5.6 on an Always-On Agent

Chatting in one window is one thing; having a model live in your messaging apps is another. Once GPT-5.6 is generally available, both OpenClaw and Hermes Agent will be able to run it — via your OpenAI key directly or through OpenRouter — and reach you on Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, WeChat, or the web. On OpenClaw Launch the model is a dropdown, and you can bring your own key, so switching from GPT-5.5 to a GPT-5.6 tier takes a minute.
