Survey Design
Design effective surveys with validated question types, appropriate scales, and logical flow. Creates instruments that collect reliable, valid data while respecting respondent time and effort.
Usage
Describe what you want to measure, your target population, and how the data will be used. The designer creates a survey structure with question wording, response options, and administration guidance.
Parameters
- Purpose: Academic research, Customer feedback, Employee engagement, or Market research
- Length: Short (5 min), Medium (10 min), or Long (20+ min)
- Mode: Online, Phone, In-person, or Mixed
- Analysis: Descriptive, Comparative, or Predictive modeling
Examples
- Customer Satisfaction Survey: NPS + CSAT hybrid survey with skip logic, open-ended follow-ups triggered by low scores, and demographic questions placed at the end to reduce dropout.
- Academic Measurement: Develop a Likert scale instrument measuring technology acceptance — 5 constructs with 4 items each, reverse-coded items for attention checking, and reliability assessment plan.
- Employee Engagement: Annual engagement survey covering 8 dimensions with benchmarkable items, manager-specific questions, and confidentiality protections for honest responses.
- Market Research: Concept testing survey for a new product — feature prioritization (MaxDiff), willingness to pay (Van Westendorp), and competitive comparison with controlled exposure.
Guidelines
- Questions use simple, unambiguous language at an 8th-grade reading level
- Double-barreled questions (asking two things at once) are eliminated
- Leading and loaded questions are identified and neutralized
- Response scales are balanced with equal positive and negative options
- Question order moves from general to specific to prevent anchoring effects
- Demographic questions are placed at the end to reduce early dropout
- Skip logic reduces respondent burden by hiding irrelevant questions
- Attention check questions identify careless responders for data quality
- Pilot testing with 5-10 respondents catches confusing wording before launch
- Survey length is estimated in minutes and kept to the minimum needed for research goals
