What Changed
Previously, users could connect their Claude subscription to OpenClaw and run autonomous AI agents at no additional cost beyond their monthly fee. Anthropic has now blocked this entirely, requiring users to opt into a pay-as-you-go extra usage system instead. Pre-purchased usage bundles offer up to 30% savings over standard API rates, and subscribers receive a one-time credit equal to their monthly plan cost, redeemable until April 17.
Why Anthropic Made the Move
Anthropic head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, wrote on X that the company subscriptions were not built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. Industry analysts had identified a price gap of more than 5x between what heavy agentic users paid under flat subscriptions and what equivalent usage would cost at API rates, with an estimated 135,000+ OpenClaw instances running at the time.
Community Backlash
OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, now at OpenAI, said he had tried to talk sense into Anthropic alongside OpenClaw board member Dave Morin, but only managed to delay the change by one week. The Hacker News discussion drew hundreds of comments, with many users reporting potential cost increases of up to 50x their previous monthly spend.
What This Means for OpenClaw Users
Users who relied on Claude subscriptions for their OpenClaw agents now have several options: switch to pay-as-you-go Claude API pricing, migrate to alternative models like GPT-5, Gemini, or open-source options through OpenRouter, or use a managed hosting service.
