What Is Runway?

Runway is a creative AI company known for producing some of the most cinematic AI-generated video on the market. Its Gen-4.5 model family excels at coherent motion, realistic lighting, and scene-level storytelling that is difficult to achieve with other video models. Runway is used by filmmakers, content creators, and product teams who need polished video output rather than rough prototypes.

When you add a Runway key to your Hermes Agent instance, you can request video generation directly from your conversations and automations. Runway handles the heavy compute; you pay per-second of generated video through your Runway account, and the result is delivered back into the conversation.

What Your Runway Key Unlocks on Hermes Agent

Runway is a video-only provider. Once your key is saved, your Hermes Agent instance gains access to:

How to Get a Runway API Key

1. Go to app.runwayml.com/account — Open app.runwayml.com/account in your browser. You will need to sign in or create an account first.
2. Create a Runway account — Click “Sign Up” and register with your email or Google OAuth. Runway offers a small free trial credit to new accounts.
3. Navigate to API Keys — In your account settings, find the API or Developer section. Click “Create API Key”.
4. Copy the key immediately — Runway shows the full key only once. It starts with key_ followed by a long alphanumeric string. Copy it to your clipboard now.
5. Add credits — Runway is pay-as-you-go via an internal credit system. Top up your Runway credit balance in the Billing section so video generation is not blocked.

Add Your Runway Key on OpenClaw Launch

1. Sign in at openclawlaunch.com and open the API Keys page.
2. Find the Runway card. Paste your key_... key into the input field and click Save. We validate the key against Runway’s API before storing it, so you will see an error immediately if something is wrong.
3. Open your Hermes Agent instance’s video settings and select Runway Gen-4.5 as the active video model. The change applies to your running instance without a redeploy.

Your key is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM and applies to all existing Hermes Agent instances on your account — no redeploy needed.

Troubleshooting

401 Unauthorized or Invalid Key

• Confirm your key starts with key_. Runway keys use the same key_ prefix as fal keys but are different credentials — make sure you are pasting the Runway key into the Runway card, not the fal card.
• Runway shows the key only once at creation. If you did not copy it, go back to your Runway account settings, revoke the old key, and generate a new one.
• Check for leading or trailing whitespace when pasting.

Insufficient Credits or Payment Error

• Runway uses an internal credit balance. If your credits are exhausted, video generation will fail with a payment or quota error.
• Log in to your Runway account and add credits under Billing.

Generation Timeout or Long Wait

• Runway Gen-4.5 video generation can take 30–120 seconds depending on clip length and server load. This is expected behavior — your Hermes Agent instance will wait for the result and deliver it once ready.
• If generation consistently times out, check the Runway status page for any ongoing incidents.
