Hermes Agent on iPhone: iMessage, Telegram and the Web Dashboard

Hermes Agent has no App Store app, and you cannot run it on an iPhone. That turns out not to matter much. Hermes is built to live where you already chat, and on iPhone that includes iMessage itself. The agent runs on a computer, a server or a managed host; the phone is just how you talk to it.

The Short Answer

  • Most native feel: iMessage, through Photon (no Mac needed) or BlueBubbles (needs a Mac).
  • Easiest to set up: Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord or Signal.
  • Full control panel: the Hermes web dashboard in Safari.
  • Not possible: running the Hermes gateway on the iPhone itself.

Is There a Hermes Agent iOS App?

No. The upstream project ships desktop installers for Mac and Windows (see the Hermes desktop app) but no iOS or Android app, so be wary of any App Store listing that uses the Hermes name.

Option 1: iMessage with Photon (No Mac Required)

Hermes bundles a Photon platform plugin. Photon is a managed service that owns the iMessage phone line and relays messages to your Hermes gateway, so you text your agent from the Messages app like any contact. Its free tier uses Photon's shared pool of iMessage lines.

hermes photon setup --phone +15551234567 # your own number
hermes gateway restart
hermes photon status

Setup signs you in through the browser and creates the Photon project. On a fresh setup it also sets PHOTON_ALLOWED_USERS to your number, so only your number is allowed (an existing allowlist is left as it is, and anyone you approve later is added). Replies arrive as formatted iMessages. Two optional settings are worth knowing: PHOTON_REACTIONS=true shows πŸ‘€/πŸ‘ tapbacks while the agent works, and PHOTON_HOME_CHANNEL is where scheduled jobs send their results.

Option 2: iMessage with BlueBubbles (Your Own Mac)

If you would rather not route messages through a third party, Hermes also supports BlueBubbles, an open-source server that runs on a Mac signed into your Apple ID. Hermes sends through the BlueBubbles REST API and receives message events through its webhooks, downloading attachments separately. Typing indicators and read receipts also need BlueBubbles's Private API helper. The catch is that the Mac has to stay on and signed in.

Option 3: Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord or Signal

These are the quickest routes, and their iPhone apps handle push notifications, voice notes and photos for you. Connect one with:

hermes gateway setup # pick the platform and follow its prompts

If Hermes does not recognise your account yet, a direct message usually gets a pairing code back (valid for one hour); with a strict allowlist configured, unknown senders are ignored instead. Approve it on the machine running Hermes with hermes pairing approve telegram <code>, then send your message again. Platform-specific walkthroughs: Telegram, WhatsApp.

Option 4: The Web Dashboard in Safari

hermes dashboard serves the Hermes web UI β€” sessions, skills, config and logs β€” and Safari on iPhone can open it. By default it listens only on the machine it runs on, so reach it in one of two ways:

  • A private network such as Tailscale. Configure dashboard authentication, then start it with hermes dashboard --host <tailscale-ip>; Hermes requires a login for any non-local bind. See Hermes Agent + Tailscale.
  • A public URL, which requires authentication. Hermes refuses to bind the dashboard to a public address with no auth configured. See Hermes Agent Gateway Token Setup.

Use Safari's Share β†’ Add to Home Screen for an app-like icon.

Which Should You Pick?

  • You live in Messages β†’ Photon, or BlueBubbles if you have a spare Mac.
  • You want it working in five minutes β†’ Telegram.
  • You want to manage the agent, not just chat β†’ the dashboard, alongside one of the above.

The Part an iPhone Can't Do

Every option above still needs a Hermes gateway running somewhere, 24/7, for your messages to reach. iOS cannot run it: there is no practical way to keep a Python service running there, and apps are suspended once you leave them. Android is different β€” see Hermes Agent on Android. Your choices are a home computer that stays on, a VPS, or a managed host.

On OpenClaw Launch

OpenClaw Launch runs the gateway for you. Deploy a Hermes bot, connect Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp or Slack from the dashboard (which also works in mobile Safari), and start chatting from your iPhone. iMessage through Photon or BlueBubbles is a self-hosted setup today, not a dashboard option.

On OpenClaw

OpenClaw is different here: it has an official iOS app that pairs with your gateway. See OpenClaw on iPhone. If a native iPhone app matters most to you, that is the framework with one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Hermes Agent app for iPhone?

No. Hermes has desktop apps for Mac and Windows but no iOS app. On iPhone you reach it through iMessage, Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Signal or the web dashboard in Safari.

Can I text Hermes Agent over iMessage?

Yes. Hermes supports iMessage through the bundled Photon plugin, which needs no Mac, or through a BlueBubbles server running on your own Mac.

Can I run Hermes Agent on my iPhone?

No. iOS cannot host a long-running gateway. Run it on a computer, a VPS or a managed host, and use the iPhone to chat with it.

Does OpenClaw have an iPhone app?

Yes. OpenClaw has an official iOS app; the OpenClaw on iPhone guide linked above covers it.
