Hermes Agent vs gstack: An Assistant and a Software Workflow

Hermes runs an assistant that can keep working across sessions. gstack gives a supported coding agent a structured approach to planning, reviewing, testing and shipping software. The useful question is which part of your workflow needs improvement.

Choose Hermes when you need an ongoing assistant for messages, files, tools and scheduled work. Choose gstack when an existing coding agent needs repeatable planning, review and QA practices. Use both when you need that software workflow inside a broader assistant setup.

What each project actually provides

Hermes Agent from Nous Research includes an agent loop, terminal tools, persistent memory, reusable skills and a messaging gateway. Its built-in scheduler can deliver recurring work to connected platforms. You configure an assistant and then give it tasks.

gstack is Garry Tan's collection of software-development skills and tools. Its workflow includes product thinking, engineering review, browser testing and release preparation. It runs through an agent host; installing the skill collection is different from provisioning a general-purpose bot.

gstack already has a Hermes path

The gstack host documentation lists Hermes support through generated methodology artifacts and an instruction-only digest. That matters: a comparison that says gstack is exclusively for Claude Code would miss its documented compatibility options.

Support has levels. A digest gives an agent working principles; generated methodology files supply host-specific instructions. Neither is a blanket guarantee that a tool-dependent command has the same behavior on every host. Check the host entry and the individual skill's dependencies before adopting a workflow.

gstack also documents /pair-agent for sharing browser work with other agents, including Hermes. This is a separately configured coordination feature. It should not be read as evidence that gstack is preinstalled on every hosted Hermes instance.

Example: release a new onboarding screen

Suppose you want to shorten an onboarding form, verify it on mobile and summarize the release afterward. Split the work into deliverables you can inspect:

  1. Define the change. Record the fields to remove, the behavior to preserve and a measurable acceptance criterion, such as completing the form without horizontal scrolling at a narrow viewport.
  2. Use the development workflow. In a supported gstack setup, use planning and review skills to challenge the change, then inspect the resulting code diff.
  3. Exercise the screen. Use the documented QA workflow against a staging environment with test data. Keep screenshots, reproduction steps and failures with the change.
  4. Keep the follow-up context. Give Hermes the approved release notes and a bounded follow-up task, such as a scheduled summary of a public status page. Configure the required access and schedule first.

This division keeps the evidence attached to the job: a reviewed diff proves what changed, browser output shows what rendered, and a later assistant report covers what happened afterward. Neither tool removes the need to check the result.

Where the overlap is real

Both can participate in coding work. Hermes has terminal and file tools; gstack's host can reason about code and retain project context. The difference is the workflow you receive and maintain. Hermes starts with a general assistant. gstack starts with opinionated methods for software delivery.

A small documentation correction may need no extra workflow. A user-facing release with browser behavior and several review stages is a stronger reason to adopt gstack. Conversely, checking a data source every morning and answering from a messaging app is a stronger reason to keep Hermes running.

Cost and maintenance

Budget for model calls, the machine that executes commands and your time reviewing output. Running extra review and QA stages can increase tool and model usage. An always-on assistant has its own hosting and operational needs, even when a particular task is small.

With gstack, maintain the host integration and browser dependencies. With self-hosted Hermes, maintain the runtime, persistent files, provider credentials and connected channels. Managed Hermes hosting offers another way to operate that assistant; it does not transfer every development tool or account into the deployment automatically.

A useful first evaluation

Try one repository change in your supported gstack host and one recurring information task in Hermes. Compare the review artifacts, intervention required, runtime cost and whether each task resumes where you expect. Add the combined setup only if those two jobs need to share context. That test is more informative than comparing the number of skills on a feature list.

Is gstack an alternative to Hermes Agent?

They solve different parts of the job. Hermes is a runnable assistant with memory, tools, messaging and scheduling. gstack adds software planning, review, QA and release methods to a supported agent host. Choose by the missing capability in your workflow.

Does gstack work with Hermes Agent?

The upstream compatibility table explicitly lists Hermes, with methodology artifacts generated using gen:skill-docs --host hermes and an instruction-only digest. It also documents cross-agent browser coordination. That does not mean every host has identical installation steps or every Claude Code command runs unchanged in Hermes.

Does gstack include a model subscription or an always-on server?

Installing the repository does not provision either. You still need the supported agent host, its model access and the environment where it runs. A persistent Hermes deployment separately needs compute and model access.

Should I install gstack just to run a Telegram assistant?

Start with Hermes and a supported messaging connection. Add gstack if you also want its software planning, code review or browser QA workflows; it is not required for the basic assistant.
