Time Off Policy Builder
Designs competitive time off policies that attract talent and promote work-life balance. Covers PTO, sick leave, holidays, parental leave, and special leave categories with administration guidelines.
Usage
Describe your company size, industry, locations, and current time off offering. Specify whether you want to design a new policy, benchmark against competitors, or revamp an existing policy.
Examples
- "Design a PTO policy for a 100-person remote tech company that is competitive but avoids unlimited PTO pitfalls"
- "Create a parental leave policy that covers birth, adoption, and foster placement for a startup"
- "Build a complete time off policy including sick leave, holidays, PTO, and volunteer days for a California employer"
Guidelines
- Research state and local leave requirements; sick leave, family leave, and holidays vary significantly by jurisdiction
- If offering unlimited PTO, set minimum usage expectations to prevent the paradox where people take less time off
- Clearly separate sick leave from PTO; combining them discourages people from taking sick days when ill
- Define blackout periods, advance notice requirements, and approval processes to prevent operational disruptions
- Include a rollover or payout policy for accrued PTO to avoid end-of-year rush and legal liability questions
