Scientific Poster Design
Design effective scientific posters that communicate your research clearly at conferences. Covers layout, content organization, visual hierarchy, and design principles for maximum impact.
Usage
Provide your research content (title, authors, abstract, key figures, conclusions) and the poster dimensions required by your conference. The designer creates a layout plan with content organization and design recommendations.
Parameters
- Size: Standard (48x36 in), Large (48x72 in), or Conference-specified dimensions
- Field: Biomedical, Engineering, Social science, Computer science, or Other
- Content: Full study, Preliminary results, or Literature review
- Style: Traditional columns, Modern billboard, or Interactive/QR-enhanced
Examples
- Traditional Research Poster: Column-based layout for a biomedical study — sections organized in reading-flow order with figure placement optimized for eye-level viewing at poster sessions.
- Billboard-Style Poster: Modern design with one central finding highlighted, minimal text (800 words max), large figures, and a QR code linking to the full paper and supplementary data.
- Computer Science Poster: Layout accommodating code snippets, architecture diagrams, performance benchmark graphs, and a live demo QR code with appropriate font sizing for technical content.
- Multi-Study Poster: Organize 3 related experiments on one poster using a visual timeline, shared methods section, and comparison table with consistent color-coding across studies.
Guidelines
- Total text should be readable in 3-5 minutes (aim for 800-1000 words maximum)
- Title is readable from 10 feet away (85+ pt font), body text from 4 feet (24+ pt)
- Visual hierarchy guides the viewer: title → key finding → supporting evidence → details
- Figures are the centerpiece — larger and more prominent than text blocks
- Color scheme uses 2-3 colors maximum plus neutral backgrounds
- White space prevents visual overload and guides the eye between sections
- QR codes link to full paper, data repositories, or contact information
- Poster flow follows cultural reading direction (left-to-right, top-to-bottom in English)
- Logos and affiliations are positioned prominently but don't dominate content
- Print considerations include resolution (300 DPI), color mode (CMYK), and bleed margins
