Org Chart Builder
Designs effective organizational structures and reporting hierarchies that support business goals. Covers department structure, span of control, role definition, and scaling plans.
Usage
Describe your current team size, departments, roles, and any organizational challenges you are experiencing. Specify your growth plans and whether you need to restructure existing teams or build new ones.
Examples
- "Design an org structure for a 40-person startup transitioning from flat to functional departments"
- "Create a reporting hierarchy for a new product division with engineering, design, product, and QA teams"
- "Restructure our customer success team from regional to pod-based organization serving enterprise accounts"
Guidelines
- Optimal span of control is 5-8 direct reports per manager; adjust based on role complexity and manager experience
- Design the structure around business processes and customer value delivery, not individual people
- Clearly define each role's decision-making authority to prevent bottlenecks and confusion
- Plan for the organization you will need in 12-18 months, not just today, to avoid frequent painful restructures
- Consider matrix or cross-functional structures for roles that need to collaborate across departments regularly
