Flight Deal Finder
Find the cheapest flights using proven search strategies.
Usage
- Search with flexible dates using Google Flights date grid or Skyscanner's "whole month" view
- Check multiple departure airports within driving distance
- Use the "Explore" feature to find cheapest destinations from your city
- Set up price alerts 2-3 months before your trip
- Compare OTA prices with airline direct booking — sometimes airline is cheaper and offers better cancellation
Examples
- Flexible destination search: On Google Flights, select your departure city, leave destination as "Explore," set your date range — the map shows cheapest fares to every destination. Found: NYC→Lisbon $280 RT in shoulder season
- Hidden city ticketing: Search NYC→Miami, then search NYC→Orlando with connection in Miami — sometimes the connecting flight is cheaper. ONLY works with one-way tickets and no checked bags. Risky: airlines can cancel frequent flyer accounts
- Positioning flight strategy: Your small city has $800 fares to Europe. Fly budget airline to a hub city ($50-80) and catch the cheap international fare ($350). Net savings: $400+
- Points sweet spots: Transfer Chase/Amex points to airline partners for outsized value. Example: 50K Virgin Atlantic points for ANA business class Tokyo, worth $5,000+ cash
Guidelines
- Book domestic flights 1-3 months ahead, international 2-8 months ahead for best prices
- Tuesday/Wednesday departures are typically 10-20% cheaper than Friday/Sunday
- Always search in incognito/private browsing mode to avoid cookie-based price tracking
- Compare: Google Flights (best UI), Skyscanner (best for flexible dates), Momondo (best for obscure routes)
- Set price alerts on Google Flights — it tracks fare drops and emails you
- Book refundable or check airline's free cancellation window (many offer 24-hour free cancellation)
