Digital Nomad Toolkit
Work effectively while traveling with the right tools and strategies.
Usage
- Set up reliable internet: primary (coworking/hotel WiFi) + backup (local SIM with data or portable hotspot)
- Choose destinations with digital nomad infrastructure and favorable time zones for your clients
- Handle finances: multi-currency accounts, no-FTF cards, local banking solutions
- Manage visas: identify countries with digital nomad visas vs tourist visa workarounds
- Maintain routines for productivity despite changing environments
Examples
- Southeast Asia base: Chiang Mai: $800-1,200/month all-in, dozens of coworking spaces ($100-150/month), excellent food ($2-5/meal), 12-hour offset from US East Coast. Work 6pm-2am local time for US business hours overlap
- Europe base (Lisbon): Digital nomad visa (D8), $1,500-2,500/month, strong coworking scene (Second Home, Outsite), EU timezone works for UK/EU clients, 5-hour offset from US East
- Internet backup strategy: Always have 3 layers: hotel/Airbnb WiFi, local SIM with 20GB+ data ($5-15/month in SE Asia), and Skyroam/GlocalMe portable hotspot for emergencies. Test video call quality on day one at each location
Guidelines
- Open a Wise (TransferWise) multi-currency account before leaving — best exchange rates and local bank details in 50+ countries
- Digital nomad visas available in: Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Estonia, Costa Rica, Thailand (DTV), Indonesia, Colombia, Brazil, and 30+ other countries. Most require $2,000-3,000/month income proof
- Tax implications are real: research your home country's rules on foreign-earned income and tax residency triggers
- Use a VPN for security on public WiFi AND to access geo-restricted services from your home country
- Book accommodation with verified reviews mentioning "good WiFi for video calls" — raw Mbps numbers don't reflect reliability
- Maintain a home base mailing address for banking, taxes, and official documents
