WeChat Launches Official ClawBot Plugin, Bringing OpenClaw to 1.3 Billion Users

Source: IT之家

Tencent has officially launched ClawBot, a native WeChat plugin that lets users connect their OpenClaw agents directly to WeChat. The announcement, made on March 22, 2026, marks the first time WeChat — the world's largest messaging platform with over 1.3 billion users — has offered built-in support for the open-source AI agent framework.

How It Works

Unlike third-party community plugins that required complex setup, ClawBot is a first-party WeChat plugin developed by Tencent's WeChat team. Users enable it from WeChat's plugin settings (Me → Settings → Functions → Plugins), then run a single command on their OpenClaw instance:

npx -y @tencent-weixin/openclaw-weixin-cli@latest install

This generates a QR code that users scan with WeChat to bind their account. Once connected, they can chat with their OpenClaw agent directly in WeChat — just like messaging a friend.

Gradual Rollout

The plugin is currently in a gradual rollout phase. Not all WeChat users have access yet — you'll need to update WeChat to the latest version and check whether the ClawBot option appears in your plugin settings. Tencent has not announced a timeline for full availability.

Part of a Broader Push

ClawBot is part of Tencent's wider OpenClaw integration strategy. The company has also launched Lobster Lighthouse (a cloud-hosted OpenClaw service), WorkBuddy (an enterprise-focused agent), and QClaw (a local desktop agent). QQ, Tencent's other major messaging platform, previously added OpenClaw bot support through official channels.

Why This Matters

WeChat's official endorsement removes the biggest barrier to OpenClaw adoption in China. Previously, connecting OpenClaw to WeChat required unofficial workarounds — paid proxy services, QR code hacks, or enterprise WeChat (WeCom) accounts. ClawBot makes it as simple as enabling a plugin and scanning a code.

For the OpenClaw ecosystem, this is arguably the single largest distribution event since the project's creation. With 1.3 billion potential users gaining native access, OpenClaw agents could become as ubiquitous as WeChat mini-programs.

Users who want to deploy an OpenClaw agent and connect it to WeChat, Telegram, Discord, or other platforms can get started in under a minute with OpenClaw Launch — no server setup required.
