On the same day the news broke about his move to OpenAI, Peter Steinberger published a detailed blog post explaining his decision and the future of OpenClaw.
Why OpenAI?
Steinberger described his core mission as wanting to "build an agent that even my mum can use." After weeks of being courted by multiple major AI labs and accessing unreleased research, he determined OpenAI offered the best platform for scaling his vision.
"I'm a builder at heart," Steinberger wrote, explaining he was not interested in company-building. Joining OpenAI was "the fastest way to bring this to everyone" — and both organizations share "the same vision" for personal AI agents.
OpenClaw's Future
The open-source project will transition to foundation status, maintaining its independence. Steinberger emphasized: "It will stay a place for thinkers, hackers and people that want a way to own their data."
OpenAI is already sponsoring the project and has committed ongoing support for its development.
The Bigger Picture
Steinberger's journey — from founding PSPDFKit, one of Europe's most successful bootstrapped tech companies, to creating the world's most popular AI agent framework — culminated in this move. His closing line captured the community spirit: "The claw is the law."
