OpenClaw Overtakes React as GitHub's Most-Starred Project

Source: WinBuzzer

OpenClaw has surpassed React to become the most-starred software project on GitHub, accumulating over 247,000 stars and 47,700 forks as of March 3, 2026. The milestone comes just weeks after the project's public launch in late January.

An Unprecedented Ascent

React, Meta's JavaScript UI library, held the top spot among software repositories for years. OpenClaw's overtaking of the project signals a major shift in developer interest toward agentic AI technologies. The framework amassed over 190,000 stars in its first 14 days alone — a pace unprecedented in GitHub history.

Why Developers Are Flocking

Unlike SaaS AI assistants, OpenClaw runs on users' own infrastructure — laptop, homelab, or VPS. This self-hosted model appeals to developers who want full control over their AI agents, including which models they use, what data they can access, and where conversations are stored.

The project's versatility also drives adoption: OpenClaw agents can manage email, browse the web, interact with messaging platforms like Telegram and Discord, and automate complex workflows — all through a single configuration file.

From Clawd to OpenClaw

The project went through two renamings before settling on its current identity. Originally called Clawd, it was renamed to Moltbot and then to OpenClaw in January 2026. Austrian developer Peter Steinberger created the project, though he has since joined OpenAI, with the project moving to an open-source foundation.

Security Remains a Concern

The rapid adoption hasn't been without friction. Multiple security vulnerabilities have been discovered and patched throughout February, and cybersecurity firms like Palo Alto Networks have warned about the risks of giving AI agents broad system access. The community's response — rapid disclosure and patching — suggests the open-source model is working as intended.

For users who want to deploy OpenClaw without managing infrastructure, OpenClaw Launch provides managed hosting with one-click deployment and automatic updates.
