Security Matters More Than You Think

Deploying an AI bot is exciting — until someone finds a way to abuse it. An unsecured bot can leak API keys, rack up thousands of dollars in API charges, expose private data, or become a tool for generating harmful content. These aren't theoretical risks. They happen regularly to bots deployed without basic security precautions.

The good news: securing an AI bot doesn't require a security team or enterprise tools. It requires attention to a manageable set of concerns and a willingness to configure things properly rather than taking shortcuts. This guide covers the essential security practices for anyone deploying an AI bot, whether you're self-hosting or using a managed platform.

API Key Management

Your AI model API key is the single most valuable secret in your bot's configuration. Anyone with this key can make API calls on your account, potentially running up unlimited charges.

  • Never hardcode keys in source code. This sounds obvious, but it remains one of the most common security mistakes. Use environment variables or a secrets manager.
  • Use separate keys for development and production. If a dev key leaks, your production bot isn't affected.
  • Set spending limits. Most API providers (OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic) let you set monthly spending caps. Always set one. A leaked key with a $50 limit causes $50 of damage, not $5,000.
  • Rotate keys regularly. Treat API keys like passwords. Rotate them every 90 days or immediately if you suspect exposure.
  • Use provider sub-keys when available. Services like OpenRouter let you create sub-keys with limited permissions and separate rate limits. Use a sub-key for each bot instance rather than sharing a master key.

Bot Token Security

Your Telegram bot token or Discord bot token controls the bot itself. A leaked bot token means someone can impersonate your bot, read messages sent to it, and respond as if they were you.

  • Treat bot tokens as top-secret. Store them in environment variables, never in config files committed to version control.
  • Use .gitignore aggressively. Ensure .env files, config files with secrets, and credential directories are excluded from your repository.
  • Regenerate tokens if exposed. Both Telegram (via BotFather) and Discord (via the developer portal) let you regenerate tokens instantly. Do this immediately if you suspect a leak.

DM Policy: Who Can Talk to Your Bot?

This is one of the most critical and most frequently misconfigured security settings. The dmPolicy controls who is allowed to send direct messages to your bot.

Telegram: Always Use "Pairing"

On Telegram, anyone can search for and message any bot. If your bot's dmPolicy is set to "open", anyone on the internet can use your bot and consume your API credits. This is a real and common attack vector — automated scripts scan for open bots and exploit them.

Always use "pairing" mode for Telegram bots. This requires users to authenticate through your web gateway before they can interact with the bot. Only verified users get access.

Discord: "Open" Is Safe

Discord works differently. Bots can only be added to servers through an explicit OAuth invite flow that the server owner controls. There's no equivalent of Telegram's public bot search. This means "open" is safe for Discord bots — only users in servers where the bot has been invited can interact with it.

Rate Limiting

Even authenticated users can abuse your bot, whether intentionally or by accident (think: a script gone wrong, or a user pasting a massive document repeatedly).

  • Implement per-user rate limits. Limit the number of messages a single user can send per minute and per hour.
  • Set token limits per request. Cap the maximum response length to prevent single requests from consuming excessive API credits.
  • Monitor for anomalies. A user suddenly sending 10x their normal volume is a signal worth investigating.

Data Privacy

Every message sent to your AI bot is processed by an AI model, which means it's sent to an API provider's servers. Users need to understand this, and you need to handle their data responsibly.

  • Be transparent about data flow. Users should know that their messages are processed by a third-party AI provider.
  • Don't log sensitive conversations. If you store conversation logs for debugging, ensure they're encrypted and access-controlled. Better yet, minimize what you log.
  • Use session isolation. In team or group settings, configure per-channel-peer session isolation so that one user's conversation context isn't visible to other users. In OpenClaw, this is the session.dmScope: "per-channel-peer" setting.
  • Understand your provider's data policy. Check whether your API provider uses your data for training. Most offer opt-out options — use them if handling sensitive information.

Encryption at Rest

If your bot stores user configurations, conversation history, or credentials on disk, encrypt them.

  • Encrypt stored configs. User configurations often contain API keys, bot tokens, and other sensitive data. Encrypt them before writing to disk or database.
  • Use proper encryption standards. AES-256-GCM is the current standard. Don't roll your own encryption — use established libraries. OpenClaw Launch uses PBKDF2 key derivation with AES-256-GCM for end-to-end encryption of stored configurations.
  • Protect encryption keys. Encryption is only as strong as the key management. Store encryption keys separately from the encrypted data, ideally in a hardware security module or key management service.

Gateway Authentication

If your bot has a web interface or API gateway, it needs proper authentication. Running an open gateway is like leaving your front door unlocked.

  • Always require gateway auth tokens. Every request to your bot's gateway should include a valid authentication token.
  • Use HTTPS exclusively. Auth tokens sent over HTTP can be intercepted. Use SSL/TLS for all gateway communication.
  • Generate strong tokens. Use cryptographically random UUIDs, not predictable strings.

Monitoring and Abuse Detection

Security isn't a set-and-forget activity. Ongoing monitoring catches issues that preventive measures miss.

  • Monitor API spending. Set up alerts for unusual spending patterns. A sudden spike often indicates a security issue.
  • Log authentication failures. Repeated failed authentication attempts indicate someone trying to break in.
  • Review bot conversations periodically. Check for users attempting to jailbreak the bot, extract system prompts, or use it for harmful purposes.
  • Set up automated health checks. Monitor that your bot is running, responding, and not stuck in error loops.

Security Checklist

Before deploying any AI bot to production, verify each item:

  1. API keys stored in environment variables, not in code
  2. Spending limits set on all API provider accounts
  3. Bot tokens excluded from version control
  4. Telegram dmPolicy set to "pairing" (not "open")
  5. Gateway authentication enabled with strong tokens
  6. HTTPS enabled for all web-facing endpoints
  7. Per-user rate limits configured
  8. Session isolation enabled for team/group bots
  9. Stored configurations encrypted at rest
  10. Spending alerts configured
  11. Health monitoring active

None of these steps are difficult individually. Together, they form a strong security baseline that protects you, your users, and your wallet.
